This is the lidded butter dish in the very popular Hornsea Pottery Contrast range.  This is the version with the flat lid.

Hornsea Pottery discontinued the award winning Contrast range in the early 90's after a production run of nearly 20 years. The pattern is still very popular and fits in well with modern decor, but items are now becoming difficult to obtain in good condition.
